Philosophy of SIWES

"To bridge the gap between theory and practice."

The acronym “SIWES” stands for Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme. It is a programme for skill acquisition designed to expose and prepare students of Universities,

Polytechnics/Colleges of Technology and Agriculture; and Colleges of Education for real work situation, they will possibly encounter after school. The scheme is designed basically for students of Natural and Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Studies, Agriculture, Technical and Business Studies in the various tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It also gives the participating students the opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to the experiences required in handling equipment and machineries that are usually not available in their various institutions of learning. SIWES was established as a result of a growing concern among industrialists that, graduates of institutions of higher learning in Nigeria lacked the necessary practical background studies needed for employment in industries. Furthermore, the employers were of the opinion that, the theoretical education taught in higher institutions was not adequate enough, to cater for the needs of the various employers of labour. It was against this background that the rationale for initiating and designing the scheme came to fore.

The SIWES scheme is a tripartite programme involving the students, higher institutions and industries/organizations. The scheme is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria and is coordinated by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The scheme was first initiated and funded by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) during its formative years (1973-1974). Based on the increasing number of students, administering of this function became enormous, hence the Fund withdrew from the scheme in 1978. This scheme was taken over by the Federal Government in 1979 and handed to both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). At that time, Colleges of Education were not part of the scheme. Later in 1984, the Federal Government reverted back the management of the scheme to Industrial Training Fund which officially took over the scheme in 1985 with funding provided by the Federal Government.

The scheme commenced in Nasarawa State University in the year 2004 as a unit under the office of the Vice-Chancellor, but transformed into a Directorate on 18th March, 2014. Its present Director is Professor Anayo Chris Etonihu.

SIWES is a strategy for skill training. It is designed to expose and prepare students of Universities, Polytechnics/Monotechnics and Colleges of Education for the real-life work situation they would meet after graduation. SIWES is an instrument for industrialization and economic development because it has the potential to induce scientific and technological productivity on students.

The scheme is aimed at promoting desired technological knowhow for the advancement of the Nigerian nation.
